Spam!!

I have been paying attention lately to how popular this blog seems to be getting, which makes me really proud!

One new measure of popularity that I seem to have achieved is my very first spam comment!  I haven't come up with a plan for how to deal with spam comments yet (I hadn't figured I'd get them yet...)

Question for you bloggers out there - how do you deal with non-offensive spam comments?  I do not mean for illegal things or porn sites (which will immediately be deleted), but in my instance, a comment was made with a link goes to a website that sells dog shampoo.  Up until now, I haven't moderated comments, and now I need to develop a plan to address spam.

I'd love to hear how you deal with it!

  1. Hi, Chrissy! I've gotten a few spammy comments, too. I added a short comments policy to my blog that says "Spammy or inappropriate comments will be removed." (In Blogger, look under "Settings" and then "Posts and comments." You can add something called a "comment form message" that displays near the comment area.) I don't know if that really does anything to deter spammers, but at least they're notified that they are wasting their time. If someone does spam my blog, I either delete the comment or mark it as spam via my comments folder. (If you mark it as spam, it goes to your spam folder and disappears from the blog post.) I've had only three spam comments total in the past year, so it hasn't been a huge problem. I haven't had to moderate comments, but I do restrict comments to registered users and make them do the word verification thingy. Anyway, that's how I deal with it and it's been working pretty well except for the occasional spammer spamming my blog with their spammy spam. I hope it remains a rare thing for both of us!

  2. I've been dealing with this recently and have had to moderate comments. The spammer was posting comments/links every hour, it was ridiculous. I had no choice to but start moderating, and since then, it's slowed way down...I think I got only one comment all last week.

  3. Thanks ladies - I am working on perfecting a comment form message as well as trying to redo some things with my comments. I've deleted the one spammy comment I had, so here's hoping I don't need to take more measures to prevent the spam comments.

  4. Hi Chrissy! I only had one spammer pop in my blog (knock on wood for no future ones!) I ended up flagging it as a spam and deleting it out of my box.

ps - Love the SPAM pic :) Gave me a huge laugh since my husband and kids love SPAM. I can't seem to get away from it and here I ran into it in your blog :) LOL!

  5. Thanks, Roxana - I live in Minnesota, so I have been to the 16,000 sq ft Spam museum, and it's absolutely amazing. There are so many interesting Spam facts :)

I've had 2-3 spammers now leave comments on one post. I have been marking the comments as spam, so hopefully they will stop soon. I don't want to moderate posts... Too much work!
